I am a documentary photographer, and I write.
I hold a degree in Contemporary History, and my photography, which is almost always reportage, still carries traces of it. I am drawn to places where the passing of time is visible: land that is emptying out, trades that are coming to an end, communities that stay on after everything else has gone.
Ruhrgebiet, In the Land of Coal and Dreams, a body of work on Germany's Ruhr region, appeared in Rhythms Monthlyin Taiwan in December 2022 and in Il Reportage between January and March 2023. A story on the Apennine lands around the Cisa Pass was published by Magazine Touring, the magazine of Touring Club Italiano, in October 2023. Further photographs have appeared in National Geographic Traveller, Meridiani Montagne, Dislivelli and Inchiesta Online. A reportage shot in Eugene, Oregon, was published in Correre in May 2015.
Photographs of mine have also been published in Vallega's Gli spazi dell'uomo and in the Grande enciclopedia per ragazzi, both issued by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore.
A reportage produced in Syracuse, Sicily, as part of the Erosioni pilotate project contributed to first prize at Europan 9, the European competition in architecture and urban design.
I am a member of the photojournalism collective Contrails, for whose project Viaggio in Italia I produced I paradossi della luce.
Occitania italiana, un paradosso alpino, Velva, la possibilità di un'isola, Ruhrgebiet and Go East, Where the Skies Are Blue have been shown in Italy at the MuSeL museum in Sestri Levante, at the Piccolo Festival di Antropologia della Montagna and across the stops of the Riscopriamo le nostre terre perdute microfestival.
Ost was exhibited at YAP, Young Artists Photographers, at Officine 100 DB in Albino. A portfolio of mine was broadcast on Bonsai TV as part of the series 1/125, in which young photographers present their own work.
I write about travel, walking and places. The pieces go out on Substack, and I collect them here, in Appunti e percorsi.
As an author I have published three handbooks on teaching digital photography for Mondadori Informatica and Sperling & Kupfer, two geography textbooks for Mondadori Education and a biography of John Keats for Electa Mondadori.
Since June 2021 I have been the creator and artistic director of Riscopriamo le nostre terre perdute, a travelling microfestival held across Italy's inland regions together with Touring Club Italiano, Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino, the Rocca di Cerere UNESCO Global Geopark and many local cultural organisations. I run it through Associazione Terreoltre, where I serve as creative director.
Alongside all this I do something else, closer to it than it may seem: I design content and handle communications for sports clubs, cultural associations and publishers, through my studio Kubasta.
Over twenty years I have worked for Zanichelli Editore, Treccani Scuola, Mondadori Education, Electa, Istituto Italiano Edizioni Atlas and Editrice La Scuola, as an editor, project manager and author. In January 2019 I founded Dire, fare, insegnare, a digital magazine on teaching, which I edited until January 2020. I was among the founders of App&Ars, an educational publishing services company I worked with until 2020.
For fifteen years I ran the athletics club I had founded, and I now handle communications for two multisport clubs in Bologna. It is the reason some of my reportage ends up being about sport.
